In Afghanistan, the Tanoli primarily live in the eastern provinces of Paktia, Gardez, and Ghazni..The word Tanawal is derived from Taniwal., The Tanoli participated in the frontier wars with the British and in Charles Allen's analysis of those wars were described as "extremely hostile" and "brave and hardy and accounted for the best swordsmen in Hazara."
They have a history that Akber Gahee Khan was son of Zorab Khan who came to Kashmir as General of army on the commandment of Qutab Shah, on signing a treaty with King of Kashmir and marrying his daughter he was on way back when he went to a saint in Kahuta asking him to pray for a child of him. The saint asked for promise of staying at the place in reward for a pray for child birth. The Child who took birth was named as Akber Gahee Khan, Akber Gahee Khan married and twelve son took birth named as 1) Kahonder Khan ( forefather of Dhonde Abbasis) 2) Sultan Bala or Barayas Al Mahroof Tanoli Khan (forefather of Tanolis in area of Tanawal and Amb Durband) 3) Chajjar Kanal 4) Salal 5) Agar Khan 6) Kool or Koor 7) Hakim Khan 8 ) Sarrara ( forefather of Sarrara Abbasi living in Pattan and Kukmang) 9) Hans Khan 10) Molam Khan 11) Dilhawas 12) Barra Hazaria . In the Hazara Division of Pakistan, the principal language of the Tanoli is adopted Hindko. Tanolis living in Pashtun dominated areas speak Pashto, whereas many living in Pakistan have adopted Urdu.
The Tanoli are also known as Tanawal, for the name of the river. The British Census included several variant forms of the name: Taniwal Tanole Tanaoli, Tanol, Tol, Tholi, Tahoa, Tarnoli, Tanis, Tanai, Turnouli, Tanawali.
History
The Tanoli were first encountered by Westerners around 1700 AD "in the trans Indus basin of the Mahaban from which they were driven across the Indus by the Yusufzai" tribe. By the late 19th century the Tanaoli had settled the Tanawal tract in the west center of the district between Abbottabad and the Indus, and in the extensive hill country between the river and the Urash plains.
According to the Settlement Report of Hazara, compiled by Major Wace (1872), the Tanolis, who founded a state named Amb, had already established their authority over Tanawal. The voluminous Urdu copy of the settlement report of Hazara contains many passages in its historical resume of the area. In a number of maps drawn at the time and enclosed in the report, showing Hazara under the Mughals and under the Durranis, the Amb state has been shown as Mulk-i-Tanawal. The original existence of that Mulk is as old as the middle period of the great Afghan invasions of India.
The Tanoli are divided into two major sub-tribes: the Hindwal and the Pallal. The latter occupies the northern portion of the Tanawal tract, and, until the dissolution of the princely states in 1968, constituted the semi-independent principality of Amb.
According to Tanoli tradition (preserved in a commentary based on an 1881/1891 census report they are named after a place in "Afghanistan" (not to be confused with the present-day state of Afghanistan

The Tanoli were counted amongst the martial races, an ideology based on the assumption that certain ethnic groups are inherently more militarily inclined than others. It was a term originally used by the British, who observed that the Scottish Highlanders were more fierce in battle than others in Britain, and extended this concept to India. They have many Pashtun customs like other tribes who also belong to arab but follow the culture of pushtoons like AWAN,SYED,MASHWANIS.
The Tanolis support themselves almost exclusively by agriculture, and their principal food is unleavened bread with buttermilk and butter; but fowls, eggs, fish, and game are also articles of diet.
Of those who live in the hills, many are as fair as Italians, with eyes of light hazel or greyish blue, and frequently brown hair and reddish beards. Those who live on the low-lying lands near the Indus are darker. All are stout and active men, and have the reputation of being good soldiers and staunch partisans.
They are hardy and simple in their habits, generally free from the vices of thieving and debauchery; but credulous, obstinate, and unforgiving.
Religiously; they are Muslims of the Sunni sect.

The Tanolis are a prominent and famous Muslim pashtoon tribe residing mainly in the district Mansehra & Abbottabad, Hazara division of NWFP Pakistan. They have a history that spans to the early 13th century since the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate. Tanoli migrated from Tonbol Pass or Taanal Pass to the Gardeez and Ghazni (Cities of Afghanistan) in 1100 AD. In 950 AD when Sultan Amir Sabuktigin invaded on Hindustan, Tanoli tribe came with his army and resided in the valley of Swat and Buner. Anwar Khan Tanoli was appointed as head or cheif of the tribe by Sultan Amir Sabuktigin.
In 1761 Tanoli tribe was prominent alliance of Ahamed Shah Abdali, Tanoli fought the battle of Pani Pat aginst Marrata. The Cheif, Zaberdast Khan Tanoli gained the title of Suba Khan from Ahmed Shah Abdale because of his bravery and boldness in the battle of Pani Pat.
Tanoli Cheif Ameer Khan martyred in battle aginst Yousfzai trib. Yousfzai occupied the area of swat and buner and compled the tanoli tribe to the estern bank of indus river.
They established the state of Amb and ruled sice 1973. They are also Khans of many villages namly Sherwan, Khotaila, Pind Kargu Khan, Kripplian, Chaamid, Shingree, Kokal, Gaajul etc of district Manshera, Abbottabad and Haripur. Some Tanoli families are still in Swat and Mingora. Few "Khails of Tanoli" are also sattled in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab. The genesis of tanoli leads to the Prophet Hazrat Yaqoob (Halesalam), from this reference they are pashton.
Tanoli has great contribution in Tehreek-e-Pakistan & Tehmeer-e-Pakistan. They always vote & support the Muslim League being a loyal pakistani. I have never read so much preposterous nonsense in my life, absolutely without any factual or historical basis. The Tanolis are an indigenous race of people inhabiting Hazara and Kashmir and have no connections ri any Arabs or Pakhtoons, at all. First of all, the so-called 'Abbasis' of this region are not Arabs either, they are Hill Rajputs, original tribal name is Dhond. Later, these Dhonds converted to Islam in 11th or 12th c, at hands of a visiting preacher Syed Abbas Shah Gilani; and adopted the name 'Dhond-Abbasi' in honor of their Pir. In the same way, the Pakhtoon claim is also fake, the Taniwal or 'Tanai' tribe have no genetic/ethnic connections to Tanolis. Indeed, there is no darra called Tanawal anywhere in Afghanistan or Central Asia. The Tanoli word is a Sanskrit word, derived from 'Tanavalli' I.e inhabitant of Tanawal/Tanavall region. So, these people took their name from the place they have historically lived in for centuries. They are 70% of indigenous Hindki/local origins with later admixture of some Turki blood. Ameer Khan Birlas was a Turki commander who led his small force into Tanawal and settled there in the 15th c. His family and followers intermarried with 'Hindwal' section of Tanolis and from that cross, was born one Hibat Khan Tanoli, Hindwal, and in the 19th c his descendant Mir Painda Khan established full control by defeating other Tanolis and becoming overall chief of Tanawal. His son Jahandad received title of 'Nawab' in 1858, from British, for his loyalty and help in 1857 War. Amb state and smaller Phulra state were thus ceded to this family.
